The Case For Living Your Dreams
Exhibit 2: The Present

The second piece of the triumvirate - The Present.
What a time to be alive.
In the original installment of this series, I made reference to how much more financial wealth exists today.
But the greater disparity between now and all time that preceded us, is access.
The riddles of life are distorted through our egocentric bias - we believe ourselves more unique than we are. Longstanding answers are what we crave to mend our woes.
But we need not trek miles to the library to explore its limited catalogue, nor trust in the oldest amongst us to be as true and wise as we hope.
No, we hold in our hands the universe.
It is Thor’s hammer - capable of all.
We can reach out and touch any piece of information known to man or any person alive. Is that not magic?
For your many quandaries..
How to reduce the anxiety you feel? How to explore the options of commercializing your passion? How to appreciate what you already have? How to be a better friend?
Abundant answers flow as endlessly as the Nile.
But what good is power without the ability to wield it? If we are not healthy in our mind, body, and spirit, and not safe in our person, how can we take the time to build?
Despite the challenges - toxins in our food, distractions against our souls, disturbances in our streets - we have never had more means to secure our health and safety than today.
If you live somewhere where the police will come after you’ve called to report someone has tried to kill you, you are better off than many - that story is one a South African friend shared with me of his own experience at seventeen. He knew better than to waste time calling them at all.
Or if you have available to you nutrient dense meat, fruit, and vegetables, you are better off than most. I have seen many a man who never grew as tall as he was meant to be.
Naturally, it can be overwhelming to cut through the noise of the online world and make sense of it in a way that best suits your ideal life.
Overwhelming, but not undoable. With experience, cultivation, and reflection - anyone can begin to weave the fabric of the existence they desire.
Better our struggle be to harness focus so we might begin to climb (the present), than there be no trail before us to choose from (the past).
Because ultimately…
"I can only make sense of my unaccountable good fortune by assuming that it means I am under special obligation to make good use of it." Marilynne Robinson
Sincerely,
Jacob
P.S. I think my book will be fully written by the end of this year.
